Finland based software house Joikusoft has released an application that converts Symbian Series 60 based smartphones, such as the Nokia E and N range, into Wi-Fi hotspots, using 3G cellular and HSDPA for the Internet connection.
When turned on, external WLAN devices can discover the open JoikuSpot and establish Internet connections wirelessly, using the mobile phone's 3G connection.
Joikusoft Oy Founder and CEO Lasse Maki argues that the "Internet should be easily and cost-efficiently accessible everywhere, and Joikusoft aims to enable that with the JoikuSpot innovation”.
JoikuSpot enables S60 Smartphones to share their 3G Internet connections wirelessly via WLAN with any compatible WLAN device such as a laptop, another Smartphone, or compatible devices like the Apple iPod touch.
Multiple devices can connect to JoikuSpot at the same time and seamlessly share the same 3G internet connection. JoikuSpot acts as an Internet gateway to external WLAN devices. The experience is exactly the same as with a wireless router in your home or at work.
There is one major limitation, however: you cannot create an encrypted access point. As such, your handset becomes a public hotspot and access cannot be restricted.
As the application is tagged with "Light" in the name, we have to assume that a full version will be released at some point, with additional supported features such as WEP/WPA security. In the meantime, you have to keep looking over your shoulder and, if your connection slows down, you know what to do.
Aside from that potential issue, JoikuSpot is easy. When turned on, external WLAN devices can discover the open JoikuSpot, and establish Internet connections wirelessly, using the mobile phoneÂ’s 3G connection. This is ideal for small workgroups or people meeting outside the office who need access to the Internet.
In light of the new high speed HSDPA service from MTN and Vodacom, JoikuSpot suggests that users may consider whether they need a physical Internet connection at all (e.g. ADSL) in certain remote locations such as holiday homes, or if they want to avoid the often very costly internet services offered by many hotels, airports or conference centres.
Other benefits Joiku promises include:
JoikuSpot WLAN connections, when compared to other connections such as Bluetooth or Infrared, are several times faster;
You can share your connection with friends and or colleagues;
For operators and device manufacturers JoikuSpot presents a new type of business opportunity: it encourages users to upgrade their mobile data plans to faster and fixed monthly plans, and usage of JoikuSpot sizeably improves average revenue per user (ARPU).
The limited beta version for Symbian OS unveiled today is called JoikuSpot Light, and can be downloaded for free at http://www.joikuspot.com
